here we go again…

Term break is almost over and second term is going to start from tomorrow. Tomorrow I got my one-to-one session with CAS before lunch and post lunch we will be getting our Eco exam papers back; later the first class of 2nd term at 2-30. This term, all the classes (except one of them) for my section are post lunch. Schedule for the first week is pretty relaxed as far as classes are concerned. We have only one class a day for this week.

Attended Golf classes yesterday n today morning. Today at the end of the class, instructor took a 20 minute session on various terms of the golf, how to calculate your handicap score, how to keep a record of your score etc etc. For the last 2 days, we are doing a lot of practice on back swing and striking with no. 7 iron club. I am finding swing n striking pretty ok, but ‘putting’ is not up to the mark. I think I will do lot of practice on ‘putting’ in next class. Next class is on Sunday; but instructor has offered us to go to the club on Saturday & practice. Guess, in next class, he will teach us more about hitting with different clubs and using a ‘T’.

1st shot at Golf

This morning, I went for Golf training with a group of 9 ISB guys. The training was at Hyderabad Golf Association very next to Golkunda fort. It’s 8 session training each for1-1/2 hr.

To start with, we were supposed to reach there by 7-45 to complete all the formalities and then start the session at 8 or so. But at 7-30 I was still in bed :- ( Thanks to AG who gave me a call at 7-30 and asked whether I had left for the club or not. Anyway I spent 15-20 minutes to get ready n then drove to the club in another 20 minutes. By then, the instructor was thro’ with telling the basic terms of the Golf.

Instructor is very gentleman and has around 15 yr. exp of playing golf. First thing he told how to ‘grip’ the ‘Golf club’ and how to take the ’stance’ for ’striking’ with ‘No. 6/7/8 Iron Club’. Then we spent some 40-45 minutes in practicing striking the ball with No. 7 iron club. The whole time, instructor kept on telling how to grip better, how to hit better, how much to bend n so on.

After the striking practice, he made us aware of some more terms like ‘putting’, ‘Birdie’, ‘Bogey’ etc etc and then came the practice session with a “putter”. In “putting”, the ball game is totally different; instead of taking a particular grip (interlock grip) and the hitting the ball hard as in striking, in putting we are supposed to stroke the ball lightly to make it reach near (or inside) the hole. Another point, we can take any comfortable grip we want.

Finally he showed us how to “chip” the ball; this is what you do when the ball is on grass and so stroking with a putter won’t help. Next game on Saturday morning, we will be getting gloves to play and I guess that will make us more comfortable in striking the ball.

Term 1 - finished

Exams are over and so is first term. Got 5 free days, I am yet to figure out what I want to do in these days.

Exams were ok. Did bad in accounting n economics but pretty good in marketing n stats. But then everybody performed the same way. So relative perf will decide the grades. Here are some observations from the first term

- At the start of term, I found Stats to be little confusing n boring. But then at the end, it was stats exam only where I preformed better than all other course. Same goes true with marketing; I did start liking this course more n more with time. Economics, which we thought, is easy turned out to be totally confusion at the end.
- Open book/ open notes exams is not a good news. Best example was accounting, despite of referring almost all the course slides in the exam, I couldn’t attempt cash flow statement. Accounting exam should be open book/open notes/ consult CA’s : -)
- It is better to be attentive in the class. Listen properly in the class and half of your job is done as far as exams/study is concerned.

I guess one thing I’ll do - I will be more attentive in class for the term 2 onwards. We’ve already received course packs for term 2. Here are the courses for the next term
-Competitive strategy -Marketing decision making -Decision models n optimisation & -Global Economics

Term 1 - almost finished …

Today we finished our classes for Economics n Marketing. Tomorrow is the last day of classes for first term. Having our first term final exams on Monday n Tuesday.

Most of the time, these days, is spent in preping for the exams. Exam for the marketing and accouting are going to be open book, open notes exams. But that doesnot make it easy. Open book n notes are not of much help when it comes to numericals; noticed this in Stats mid term exam. One cheatsheet was allowed in that exam; though I took one with me, I dont remember using it at all.
